Board Games Society
Vol I
By Hazel Bloomfield, President of Hullfire Newspaper. With Thanks to the executive team at the Board Games Society.
Board Games Society is one of the largest societies on campus and with its welcoming and enjoyable socials, it’s easy to understand why. Meeting every Tuesday at 18:00 in the Student’s Union you can expect to find members buried away in all manner of board games. There are many different types of board games owned by the society from mystery games, party games, strategy and card games. Secret Hitler, Settlers of Catan and the social deduction game Werewolf are the most popular games to play at Board game society.
Aside from their wide selection of games one of the main draws of the society comes from its strong community, built by an amazing executive team. Their President was kind enough to speak to us. When asked ‘What draws people to the society?’ we were told: ‘Board games society is a place where people can have a chill night in without the pressures of alcohol or the skill level. Board Games is a place where people can play games, make friends and try new things.’
This team works tirelessly to ensure a relaxing and inclusive environment by organising games and constantly interacting with members, ensuring no one is left out. This hard work paid off with the Board Games Society winning two awards at the Societies Celebration Council for ‘Most Improved Society’ and another for ‘Gaming, Fandom & Interest Society of the Year’.
Board Games is also one of the more social societies on campus, they regularly host joint games nights with many other societies such as WARPs, GameSoc and Education Society. It’s not just cosy games nights however, they also host off-campus events such as bowling. Last year they took part in the very popular 24-hour fundraising event with plans in the works to run it again in 2025. The future is looking busy for Board Games society with plenty of socials, events and new games planned for the horizon.
